McKenna & David's Wedding
San Pedro - Hollywood Scavenger Hunt!
YEA, HOORAH! Thank you for attending McKenna & Davids Wedding.
During the free-time between the ceremony and the reception we have created a simple Scavenger Hunt for you based on local spots in the area that were filmed here in our home town of San Pedro, CA.
Of course you are welcome to do what you like but we thought this would be fun while the bride and groom and the wedding party take photos.
PLEASE be sure to be at Michaels by 5:45pm, time will fly when you are having fun!
The game is simple: Take pictures of yourselves at these movie scenes. The person/team who shows us evidence of the most scenes visited will win a prize. Take pictures on your phone, we want proof!
Drive safely and have fun exploring!
You have seen San Pedro much more often that you realize. It a favorite filming location for Movies, TV shows, and Commercials. So here is a chance to stand where the stars stood recently or even many years ago.
Most all locations are close by. You don't need to go in any order, but you may want to review the locations and look at a map below (blue circles) to best strategize your moves.
Extra Credit can be earned: Pictures of other Movies/shows are accepted, but you need to show us the scene with your picture. It can be a set piece for show intro (for example Reba's new show "Happy's Place" is a 7th picture on 7th street). Other hints are: "Prison Break", had many scenes filmed here. Nearby in the Harbor there was a scene filmed from the movie "Heat". The Warner Grand was filmed in many many TV shows and maybe even a movie...
Good luck & Have fun! (Ready, Set, Go!)
50 First Dates - Cabrillo Beach Bath House
In 50 first dates "Lucy" (Drew Barrymore) and Henry (Adam Sandler) visit the "Callahan Insititute - Brain Injury Clinic". This is The
Cabrillo Bath house. The prominent statue is Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo (a strange statue in a film set in Hawaii).
Family fact: Joe and Mary Sucher were married on the beach behind this location. Was it their 50th first date too?
Top Gun 2 (Bonus - Two Locations!)
There are two scenes at Penny's house. The 1st is after the Paseo ride and is at night. The second is after the day on the sailboat but again on motorcycle! Penny's house overlooks Cabrillo Beach and the Bathhouse.
The Motorcycle Ride with Penny - Paseo Del Mar
September and Pat were treated with a visit from Tom Cruise at the end of their street. That was the staging location for this scene. Tom would ride with Penny on his infamous bike and they film on Paseo Del Mar - down the hill from the Church McKenna and David are now married!
A Few Good Men
We are not done with Tom. About 40 years before Top Gun II Tom was here in San Pedro filming "A Few Good Men" with Jack Nicholson and Demi Moore. There are two locations:
Guantanamo Bay Naval Base (CUBA) - Breakfast with Colonel Jessup
We're all Cuban today! But the Guantanamo in the movie is on the
Ft. MacArthur housing location down Pacific Street. At breakfast, shortly before Colonel Jessup askes Major Kaffee to "ask him nicely" you can see the Los Angeles Harbor Light House in the distant background.
The Military Courtroom (Court Marshall Trial)
"I want the truth!"- Major Kaffee
"You can't handle the truth!" - Colonel Jessup
Those famous lines were said a
maybe 100 ft from the SSPX Chapel where McKenna and David would be married. The now classroom were army barracks and used for this courtroom scene!
We don't know which building, but a picture in front of one will do for this game.
Chinatown
Over 30 years before Jack Nicholson filmed a Few Good Men he was here as a PI in Chinatown.
Chinatown is a fictional movie set in the real "water wars" of Los Angeles County. The fictional charter Hollis Mulwray represents the real live Los Angeles city engineer William Mulholland and the movies starts with Mulway refusing the build a damn that would be similar to the one that failed, reflecting the real-life failure of the St. Francis Damn which occurred on March 12, 1928,
Hollis Mulwray waits for water runoff.
At
Pt. Fermin where J.J. Gittes (Jack Nicholson) follows Hollis Mulwray who will await water run-off from the sewer into the Pacific Ocean.
Oddity: There is a second scene in the movie where JJ Gittes goes to Curly's house in San Pedro. But the house used is not in San Pedro, but instead East Hollywood.
The Big Lebowski - Donnie's Ashes
Near the end of this cult classic "The Dude" (Lebowski played by Jeff Bridges and Walter Sobchak (played by John Goodman) c0me down to
"Sunken City" in San Pedro to throw Theodores ashes into the ocean.
Sunken City is a neighborhood in San Pedro whose land sank/slid toward the ocean back in 1929. This please is now hard to get to - one access point is found in the Chinatown Scene, but has recently been gated off due to new land slid movement. There is another way to get there east of Pt. Fermin.
Mad Men
The real Don Draper's wife's house
Don't go to far away from Pt. Fermin. Near there is
4021 S Carolina St where the real Don Draper's wife lived.
This clip shows the house, but also shows the same part of Paseo Del Mar for the Top Gun II motorcycle scene.
The Usual Suspects
This excellent movie with Kevin Spacey has a twist most nobody sees. Near the start of the movie the 'usual suspects" (bad guys) all meet up at the
Korean Friendship Bell - near the SSPX Chapel.
The Basketball Court
Just west of the Korean Bell is a
basketball court. Many commercials and promotions are filmed here.
Crash
The 2004 movie "Crash" features Matt Dillon who plays a cop who rescues a black woman who he harassed and partially molested in a traffic stop days before. This was a very intense scene. In the background of this picture is one of the entrances to Angels Gate Park where the SSPX chapel sits - this is 37th and Gaffey. The crash scene was just uphill at the curved part of the road at the base of Lookout Point Park (a great location to see the harbor).
Gone in 60 Seconds
Near the beginning of the movie Memphis raines (Nicolas Cage) visits his brother Kip (Giovanni Ribisi) at his San Pedro home
Some Kind of Wonderful
John Hughes made many great teenage movies that we know well. One is Some Kind of Wonderful that featured Eric Stolz who played Keith Nelson and Mary Stuart Masterson who played Watts. They went to "San Paulo High School" is
San Pedro High where both Mckenna and Kealan went to school.
Bonus: At the start of the movie Keith walks down the train tracks to his home. His home is a bit of drive, just south of San Pedro near the Phillips 66 Refinery at
1445 W. I Street,
There is certainly more to find, but these are some of my favorites. I hope you have fun exploring San Pedro!
Here is a list of well over 100 movies and TV shows filmed in San Pedro!
